Personal & Professional Life

I am an avid fan of many Washington, DC area sports teams including DC United, Nationals, Capitals and my University of Maryland Terrapins. While at Maryland I served as an engineer, a DJ and as Operations Manager at WMUC-FM 88.1, our freeform radio station on campus. Growing up in DC I was active in the local music scene, helping put on DIY shows across the area.

While working on my PhD at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, I was active in University administration. I served as a Senator and Secretary for the UAB Graduate Student Association, as well as serving on the Biochemistry & Molecular Genetics Admissions Committee and the Lister-Hill Library User Centered Design Committee. I also competed on a rec league softball team, The Bad News Bearons, known for its rowdy fan base, poor level of play and occasional theme uniform nights.

At UTMB I was active in Postdoctoral governance and served as the President of the UTMB Postdoctoral Association. I served ex officio as a member of the Postdoctoral Advisory Committee, composed of Postdoctoral scholars, faculty, and administration that oversees postdoctoral affairs. Together we advocated for Postdocs throughout the university.

In my free time in New Brunswick I can be found riding my bike, reading books (history, science fiction, baseball, fiction) at bars with a properly poured craft beer, jogging, and listening to podcasts. I tweet frequently on all of my interests at _colm_.
